On June 9, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that water bottle manufacturer CamelBak had recalled caps sold with two of its water bottles over safety concerns. The bottles with which the recalled caps came were sold for between $10 and $25 on Camelbak.com and in sporting goods stores throughout the U.S. between Feb. 2019 and 2021. The bottles came in 17-, 21-, and 24-oz. sizes and can be identified by the date codes H19039, H19063, or H19175 printed on the underside of the cap. As of the recall date, CamelBak had received 14 reports of the affected caps malfunctioning. In each case, the silicone valve located inside the cap detached, presenting a choking hazard to anyone using the bottle. While no injuries associated with the use of the CamelBak bottles have been reported, the CPSC says, “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled caps sold with the water bottles and contact CamelBak for a free replacement cap.” The brand can be contacted at 800-767-8725 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT on weekdays or via its website. This isn’t the first time the CamelBak Podium bottle caps were identified as potentially hazardous. In April 2021, CamelBak announced the recall of the same caps with the same date codes in the U.K. due to the potential choking hazard. “If your cap has one of these date codes, you should IMMEDIATELY discard the cap for your continued safety!” said the brand in a statement.
